Republicans rolled into Dallas on Wednesday for the party's first midterm convention, a two-night production at the American Airlines Center that organizers have been calling “Trump-a-Palooza.” After the first night, the news reports came out — similar to reports during the RNC =: ‘Grindr crashed in Dallas.’ Sure enough, by Thursday morning, Dallas was the brightest spot on Grindr's outage map.
The San Antonio Current reported that Downdetector, the site that crowdsources reports of apps breaking, showed Dallas leading the country in Grindr complaints while the convention was underway.
Social media did what social media does. One user wondered aloud why a company that has watched this happen before hasn't bought more servers.
Another noted that Republicans do keep telling everyone they're a big tent.
It's a good joke. It's also a pattern with a paper trail going back a decade.
The Receipts
After the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Vice reported that sources inside Grindr clocked a 66% traffic jump around the convention hub. Other reliable hotspots — Times Square, South Beach — saw nothing comparable that week.
In July 2024, during the RNC in Milwaukee, more than a thousand people reported Grindr problems in the metro area on a single Tuesday afternoon, Newsweek reported.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel spoke with a local user who said blank and faceless profiles flooded his grid that week—he gave up counting at fifty.
A man outside the convention perimeter shouted at delegates on their way out: "You crashed our website!"
And last year in Phoenix, during the memorial service for Charlie Kirk, Queerty reported another local surge in outage complaints.

We're Honest With You — Nuance About Why Grindr Crashed In Dallas
Downdetector runs on self-reported complaints, which means it measures what people say is happening, not what is verifiably happening on a company's servers. In 2024, Grindr's own status page showed no outage at all during the week everyone insisted the app was collapsing.
Plenty of the viral RNC content that year was flatly fabricated — a clip of someone scrolling a packed grid of users pn the Grindr app turned out to be filmed at a Troye Sivan concert, and a widely shared “Grindr executive” quote came from a satire account that a former congressman then repeated as fact.
Dating apps light up anytime a large group of people are dumped into a city. It happens during trade shows, bowling tournaments, and academic conferences. Nobody writes about those.
This one keeps making news because of the programming.
What Was On Stage
The Dallas convention is built around a message strategy, and a big chunk of that strategy is painting Democrats as extremists — a category that has, for several election cycles running, included anyone who is transgender.
In 2024, NBC News counted the RNC speakers who had built national profiles on anti-gay and anti-trans rhetoric before they walked out to the podium.
That rhetoric has a legislative dark side. The ACLU is currently tracking more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills moving through state legislatures this year.
The Trans Legislation Tracker counts 813 state bills and 145 federal ones attacking trans and gender-nonconforming people in 2026 alone.
Most won't pass — advocates have historically beaten roughly 92% of them — but the ones that do pass take away a teenager's medication, a family's ability to stay in their state, a person's accurate driver's license.
Who This Is About (Our Annoying Empathy Is Showing)
While we aren't going to give Republican politicians any grace, we can swallow our anger over their actions and racist rhetoric in order to speak about their lives. Just know that we aren't asking anyone to show them compassion.
There's a version of this story that ends with a laugh at closeted men in a Dallas hotel room, but whoever is refreshing that app tonight is not the architect of anything. The closet is a product, and this convention sells it.
Somebody who spends his career voting for bills that call people like him a threat to children has already lost more self-respect than any news cycle could damage.
Their lives aren't a punchline, but lonely lives spent hiding who they are and self-loathing.
These conservatives then look at the Democratic Party, where politicians and voters are free to be themselves and everyone is welcome regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or race. That appears to breed envy, and they express it as anger and hate.
The people who pay the real price aren't in the arena at all. They're the trans kids in those delegates' districts whose care got cut off mid-treatment.
The drag performers who've spent three years in court. The queer teenagers watching a national broadcast that tells them, in prime time, that they're what's wrong with the country.
The Grindr map is a small, dumb, funny thing. What the party did with two nights of national television — and what it's promising to do with a majority after November 3 — is not.
