I came across this video on X, shared by another user. I didn’t remember ever seeing it. The January 6th Committee posted it on June 9, 2022, the night of its first primetime hearing. Maybe I just missed it.
But if I missed it, a lot of other people probably did too. So I’m putting it out there, hoping a few Fox News viewers stumble across it.
They sure didn’t see it on Fox. When the committee held that first hearing, most major networks carried it live. Fox News didn’t. It moved the hearing to Fox Business, a much smaller channel, and kept Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity on the air.
Carlson called the hearing “propaganda,” and Fox hosts spent the night downplaying the violence.
More than 3 million people watched Fox’s primetime shows that night. They missed never-before-seen footage of rioters beating police officers with flagpoles and bats, smashing windows, and forcing their way into the Capitol.
What really happened at the Speaker’s Lobby door
One moment from that day gets retold a lot in MAGA circles: the death of Ashli Babbitt. Trump has claimed she was “innocently standing there” when she was shot. That’s not what happened.
Rioters smashed the glass in a barricaded door leading to the Speaker’s Lobby, just outside the House chamber. Lawmakers and their staff were on the other side, sheltering from the mob.
Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd stood behind that door with his gun drawn. He says he was yelling, “Please stop, get back, get back.” Babbitt climbed into the broken window anyway. Byrd fired one shot as she came through, hitting her in the shoulder. She died from the wound.
Byrd didn’t wait for her to make it all the way in, and there’s a reason. He said 60 to 80 House members were still inside the chamber. If the mob got through that door, they’d be right on top of members of Congress. A handful of officers can’t hold back a crowd that size. If the first person gets through, everyone behind her follows.
The Justice Department and the Capitol Police both investigated the shooting, and both cleared Byrd. Prosecutors found no grounds to charge him, and the Capitol Police found he followed department policy. Trump’s Justice Department still agreed in 2025 to pay Babbitt’s family $5 million.
Don’t take anyone’s word for what happened on January 6th, including mine. Watch it for yourself, then share it with someone who needs to see it.
