I recently wrote a little something called: The ripple effects of mass deportation that highlighted this exact issue—among other things.
Migrants make up the majority of farm workers in this country. In one particular case, citrus farmers were upset because ICE conducting raids in the area caused their workers to stop showing up to work. That meant a lot of citrus fruit was left unpicked, rotting in the sun.
The citrus farmers warned what this meant: Less fruits and vegetables + Same level of consumer demand = high prices.
I saw some MAGA “men” on X celebrating this news because it meant “the jobs were now available to American workers.” I had to break it to them: Migrants didn’t have these jobs because they took them before Americans could apply. American workers refuse to work long hours in the hot sun picking produce for low pay.
The same way that American workers don’t want to clean hotel rooms or wash dishes or work in meat-packing plants for low wages. Undocumented immigrants do the work Americans refuse to do. They also paid $100 billion in taxes in 2022 alone. DOGE is trying to cut spending to make up for the $7.5 trillion Trump will add to the deficit over 10 years with his tax cuts for the rich. Somehow taking $100 billion in tax revenue away doesn’t seem like such a smart move.
Farmers know who is to blame for this. They knew who to blame when they lost billions during the trade wars of Trump’s first term. Chaos does not equal peace, stability, and prosperity.
The man walked into the White House with a sledgehammer and now we’ve had 2 plane crashes after zero over the last decade, food prices are going up, ICE raids are taking place in schools and churches, he’s engaging in trade wars with our allies, we no longer belong to important international organizations that protect us. Oh, yeah. He blocked public health agencies like the CDC from communicating with the American people. I sure hope we don’t have another pandemic on Trump’s watch!
