I have written and taught for 26 years about constitutional law, specializing in the freedom of expression and with secondary interests in gun regulation, law and religion, and regulations of the political process. I wrote Managed Speech: The Roberts Court’s First Amendment (Oxford University Press, 2017). I have published dozens of academic articles, book chapters, and general audience essays. I have taught at Washington University since 2008. I previously taught at Villanova University. I clerked on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice John Paul Stevens and on the U.S. District Court (D.C.) for Judge Louis Oberdorfer. I earned my law degree magna cum laude from the University of Michigan, where I was editor-in-chief of the Michigan Law Review. I received my undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Yale.
