WASHINGTON — The FBI has launched an investigation into a potential assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump following gunfire Sunday near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the Republican presidential nominee was on the golf course at the time.
A male suspect is in custody, law enforcement officials said.
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement.
U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi announced via social media that “a protective incident” involving Trump took place just before 2 p.m. Eastern time, adding that the Secret Service was working alongside the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the matter. He stated that Trump was unharmed.
Authorities have yet to name a suspect, and it remains unclear whether Trump was the intended target. The private golf club is located approximately 4 miles from Trump’s main residence at Mar-a-Lago.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, posted on X, stating that she had been briefed and is glad to hear that Trump is safe.
The White House stated that President Joe Biden was also briefed.
“They are relieved to know that he is safe,” said the White House, referring to Biden and Harris. “They will be kept regularly updated by their team.”
This attempt follows a July 13 assassination attempt that occurred during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
