President Donald Trump said on Monday that the US is in talks with Iran regarding a nuclear deal. This comes after Trump levied threats against Iran on a Truth Social post announcing bombing of the Houthis in Yemen.

From reporting by BBC:

The US and Iran are holding “direct talks” over a possible nuclear deal on Saturday, Donald Trump has said.

Discussions between Washington and Tehran will be at a “very high level”, the US president said, before warning it would be a “very bad day for Iran” if no agreement was reached.

Last month, Trump raised the prospect of military action against Iran after its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly rejected the offer of direct talks.

Trump disclosed the talks after a White House meeting with Israel’s leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who has also previously raised the prospect of attacking Iran to stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons.

In the first Trump Administration, the President ripped up the Iran Nuclear deal that prevented the country from stockpiling Uranium, used to create nuclear weapons.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, Iran’s mission at the United Nations had no immediate comment Monday.

“Trump recently sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader, 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for direct negotiations with the United States over its rapidly advancing nuclear program. But Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said late last month that Iran had rejected Trump’s entreaty while leaving open the possibility of indirect negotiations with Washington.”
