It can feel impossible to imagine a “Triple Trumper” (someone who voted for Donald Trump each of the three times he was on the ballot) “coming to their senses.” Still, a recent C-SPAN caller from New Mexico just gave us a masterclass in humility. Let’s talk about why MAGA is turning against Trump.
Calling into a live C-SPAN broadcast, a caller apologized to the country for supporting a man he now describes as “rotten.”
Hearing him list the reasons behind his decision to stop supporting him—specifically citing the blatant corruption and even Trump’s questionable “meme coin” ventures—was a moment of validation.
For years, many of us have felt like we were shouting into a void, wondering how voters on the Right could ignore what was happening right in front of them.
The High Cost of Admitting You’re Wrong
Within Left-leaning circles, there is often a demand for apologies or a refusal to forgive those who finally “see the light.” I view it differently. Perhaps it’s just my strong empathy, but I also try to put myself in their shoes.
Admitting you were wrong is hard. Admitting you were wrong after years of staunchly defending a leader is even harder.
It becomes exponentially more difficult if you were an a**hole to the truth-tellers along the way. To acknowledge you were wrong often means acknowledging you were a jerk to people who were only trying to help you.

Why Demanding Apologies is Counterproductive
I’m not in the camp of people demanding a formal apology. Why? Because it’s counterproductive. When you see someone finally swallowing their pride, the worst thing you can do is discourage them from opening up by shouting, “You need to apologize!”
Aggression only breeds defensiveness. If we make the “exit ramp” from MAGA a gauntlet of shame, people who are on the fence will simply stay where they are to avoid the humiliation.
Instead, we should accept those who continue to be misled by a powerful propaganda machine made up of the President, Republican politicians in Congress, and media figures they were taught to trust.
Under normal circumstances, believing what the leader of the free world and the people who are representing you in government are telling you isn’t that unthinkable.
Combine the Republican propaganda machine with social media algorithms feeding you only the news and content that corroborates what the machine is saying, and you end up on “Earth 2.”
