Several Republicans promised to protect Medicaid. But when it came down to it, they didn’t.

The House voted to advance the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, endangering health care for millions of the poorest Americans.

As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said in a speech on the House floor at around 2 a.m.: “When this country wakes up in the morning, there will be consequences to pay for this.”

The bill also included 11th-hour additions to ban Affordable Care Act health care plans from covering abortion and gender-affirming care for all Medicaid patients, including adults, after initially proposing to ban care for just minors.
