It might be time to seriously consider the 25th Amendment. Overnight—at midnight—President Donald Trump was on Truth Social having a “social breakdown.” He shared an A.I. video of Nicolás Maduro surrendering to Trump with a statement claiming the leader of Venezuela admitted that President Joe Biden asked him to push Tren de Aragua drug gang members into the United States—An obvious lie that he shared as if it were fact. He spent an hour posting long rants of his own and sharing Truth Social users’ posts.
You’ll see the terms “social breakdown” and “social break” throughout this article. What are they from? I made them up. 🤓 (Hey, our main goal is to provide honest news and real, authentic commentary!) If you try to find more information about what a “social break[down]” is, I doubt you’ll find anything. It came out as I was typing and sounds like it accurately describes what happened with Trump, so I’m not changing it. 😌
Such erratic behavior raises questions about the mental well-being of our leader. This is particularly concerning because it’s happening alongside issues with Ukraine/Russia “peace” negotiations and Caribbean boat strikes.
Think about how a leader’s mental state can influence national security policies. If a president is unable to think clearly, their decisions regarding international relations could have catastrophic consequences.
A president posting incoherent messages on social media can also lead to confusion among allies and adversaries alike. Imagine the impact of these posts on diplomatic relationships. How will world leaders interpret President Trump’s erratic online behavior?
The world is definitely paying attention. They know Trump makes his announcements, policy changes, and demands of Zelensky, Putin, or Europe via social media posts.
Trump’s posts not only reflect his state of mind but can also affect the morale of the country. A barrage of nonsensical posts could lead to public anxiety and further erosion of trust in this administration (among those who have any trust left).
The “Social Break”
Instead of going over each post—400 in one hour—I’ll let Ben Meiselas of the Meidas Touch Network show you some of Trump’s posts. He’ll also explain some of the crazy things Trump was saying in his many Truth Social rants overnight. (There’s additional news after this story in the video).
The President of the United States posted 400 times in one hour. The posts are insane. It’s time for serious conversations inside the White House. At the very least, Donald Trump needs professional help.
What is the 25th Amendment?
The 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is designed to clarify the procedures for presidential succession and the transfer of power when a president is unable to fulfill their duties.
It allows for the vice president to assume the presidency if the president is incapacitated, whether due to physical or mental reasons. Additionally, it provides a mechanism for the president to voluntarily transfer power to the vice president, ensuring continuity of government.
This process requires careful consideration and is intended to prevent any potential abuse of power. It’s an important safeguard to ensure that the country is led effectively, especially in times of crisis. The amendment also outlines the procedure for the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to declare the president unfit to serve.
It underscores the importance of a well-defined chain of command during unforeseen circumstances. As political dynamics shift, the relevance of this amendment continues to spur debate among lawmakers and the public.
Exploring the implications of the amendment also leads to broader discussions about mental health in politics. The stigma surrounding mental health issues often prevents open discussion. However, if leaders are to be held accountable for their mental fitness, this could pave the way for more nuanced discussions about mental health for everyone.
The societal impact of this type of discussion is that it encourages individuals to seek help when needed without fear of judgment.
It’s Been Invoked Before
The 25th Amendment has been invoked in various forms throughout history, but its true essence lies in ensuring stability.
For example, when Richard Nixon resigned, Gerald Ford assumed the presidency, and the transfer was smooth due to the guidelines set forth in this amendment. It also serves as a reminder that leadership transitions can and should be executed with clarity and purpose.
Trump obviously refused to follow the guidelines regarding a smooth, immediate transfer of power after he lost the 2020 election.
Understanding the sections of this amendment is necessary for accurate interpretation. Section 1 establishes the process for filling a vacancy in the office of the presidency. Section 2 addresses the vice presidency. Sections 3 and 4 provide procedures for a president to voluntarily transfer power or for the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to act if the president is unfit.
This framework is important in maintaining the integrity of the office and making sure that there is always a competent leader in the White House.
Joe Biden
Republican politicians, pundits, and hosts on Conservative news shows were demanding the 25th Amendment be invoked after President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline became too obvious to ignore (and well before), therefore, they have no reason to deny the need to seriously consider invoking it in Trump’s second term.
Not only because of his strange rants and frequent posts on social media, but Psychiatrists who are members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) diagnosed President Trump with Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Sociopathy. They tried to warn the American people prior to the 2024 election.
They even held their convention in Washington D.C. so they could go together to speak with the members of Congress about Trump’s psychological issues. They wanted to share their concerns about having someone with these issues leading the country as the most powerful person in the world.
There’s a podcast called Shrinking Trump on YouTube (and anywhere you get your podcasts) featuring two Psychologists discussing their belief that Trump has Frontotemporal Dementia and that it has been steadily getting worse. Donald Trump’s father suffered from dementia and Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, has said she sees Fred Trump’s behaviors and facial expressions in the President. Remember the way he stood, facing forward, and looked “lost” after the gentleman fainted during their press conference? When I first saw that image on television, I shouted, “Sociopath!.”
Origin, History, and Mental Fitness
To fully appreciate the significance of the 25th Amendment, we need to understand its origins and the circumstances that led to its adoption.
The amendment was ratified in 1967, during a time when the nation was grappling with the legacies of past presidencies and the evolving nature of leadership. Events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy highlighted the need for a clear succession plan, prompting lawmakers to address the potential for a vacancy in the office of the presidency.
The amendment emphasizes the need for mental fitness assessments. In recent years, the conversation surrounding mental health has gained traction. This prompts the question: Should there be standardized evaluations for presidents?
If all Presidents were under the age of… say … 70, this wouldn’t an issue that we need to consider. However, our last three presidents have been in their late 70’s and early 80’s. If that trend were to continue, we’d definitely need to institute a cognitive testing policy.
While the idea of cognitive testing (like the dementia tests Trump is given but thinks they’re IQ tests he “aces.”) of the president may seem radical, the benefits of ensuring a mentally sound leader outweighs the concerns about privacy and autonomy. We should study how these evaluations could be implemented without infringing on individual rights.
The political ramifications of invoking the 25th Amendment can’t be ignored either. Critics may argue that using it could lead to a slippery slope where political opponents seek to exploit it for their gain. We need to have a thorough discussion about the ethical application of the amendment. Establishing bipartisan support for its use could help mitigate fears of politicization (maybe?).
In times of crisis, the importance of the 25th Amendment can’t be understated. Historical examples illustrate how leadership failures can worsen challenges. For instance, during natural disasters, a decisive leader is essential for coordinating relief efforts. Delays or confusion in decision-making could lead to loss of life or prolonged suffering. By ensuring that our president is fit to lead, the amendment serves as a safeguard against tragedies.
As we continue to witness the unfolding of events that test the limits of the 25th Amendment, one thing remains clear: the need for a competent and mentally fit president is undeniable. It stands asa critical element in preserving the integrity of the office and, by extension, the nation itself. In a time when effective governance is critical, the principles enshrined in the 25th Amendment must be upheld with diligence and responsibility.
